Violet at 5 Months
Growth & Appearance:
I'm still receiving comments about how big you are, but honestly, I think you've leveled out somewhat. You have bread dough thighs. People just can't help but touch them and honestly, I can't blame them. It's pretty obvious we never feed you.
Your hair is longer on top than last month. I was drying you off after a bath recently and saw a super long strand of hair sticking out at the back. I thought it was a piece of my hair, so I pulled it to get it off of you and it was, indeed, attached. So, you have one strand of hair that is literally five inches long. You have dark eyelashes and your eyebrows are getting darker. I've been waiting to see if your eyes are going to transition to green or hazel, but they are still very blue.
When you smile big you have a dimple on your right side.
We moved into a bigger car seat this month.
Development: Your personality is really starting to develop. You're silly. You're laughing regularly now and usually at weird things, like falling over or throwing your pacifier to the floor. You are extremely observant. To the point that complete strangers will notice and say something about it. You seem wise. You pay very close attention to the pets, particularly Apollo. You'll reach out to grab him occasionally. He will give you a sniff and return the attention by rubbing on you.
You mock people. Boppa was showing your how to call a dog a few days ago and you made the clicking sound after him.
You suck on your index and middle finger for comfort now. You will also clasp your hands together sometimes for comfort, like if you're mad about a diaper change. You suck on your toes for fun. You suck on your bottom lip for I don't know why.
You're very ticklish, especially your feet.
One of my favorite new things about you is being bashful. Recently when people talk to you, you will grin and then turn and bury your face in my chest. I seriously die every time you do it.
You grab every thing. I have to be careful. You'll knock things off of tables and cabinets. You especially like to grab at cups. You also like to reach out and touch people's faces when they are talking to you.
You can roll over from back to belly now and you do it often, especially when I'm trying to change your diaper. You can travel several feet via rolling. If I want you to stay on your pallet I usually have to roll blankets up around the edges. Rolling border.
You can sit up now, although you can't be trusted alone. You can sit for several minutes, but sometimes reaching for toys will cause you to topple over. This skill really clicked while we were taking these photographs with the pumpkin. Daddy put a pumpkin in front of you to hold on to. After we took it away you could suddenly sit independently. You improve every day.
When people hold you in a sitting position you use the support of their arms, stiffen your body and forcefully stand up. It's actually difficult to make you stay seated. In general, you're very frustrated by your limitations.
You can travel in your walker now, but all you know is reverse. You always end up backing yourself into corners.
Feeding: You're eating real food once a day, usually around lunch time. We stuck to cereal until you got the hang of actually swallowing the food, which didn't take very long. You've had apple sauce mixed in your cereal and just yesterday you had banana for the first time. You were really mad when it was all gone. We're trying butternut squash in a few days.
You're very impatient when it comes time to eat, both nursing and eating real food. As soon as I put you in your chair to eat you start panting and slapping the tray while I'm preparing your meal. Sometimes you even get mad when I don't give you another spoonful quick enough.
You pay very close attention to other people's plates and glasses. No one is fooling you. You know exactly what is going on and I often feel guilty for eating in front of you. You will carefully watch food travel from the plate to my mouth.
We haven't replaced a nursing meal with a food meal and that's fine with me. You still nurse just as much as before. Perhaps, a bit less frequently at night.
I gave you a straw cup a few days ago. At first you would just chew on the straw, then the first time you sucked on it you really sucked on it and choked yourself. Overall, you really like the cup, even if you're just holding onto the handles.
MeMe gave you some water from a water bottle the other day and now you freak out when one is near. You'll cry until it is given to you to hold.
Sleeping: Cheers to bedtime being a thousand-billion times easier now then it was when I posted last month. To what can I attribute this amazing happenstance? A swaddle sack. It has seriously changed my life. Rather than battling you to go to sleep at bedtime for 1-2 hours, I simply wrap you up in your muslin sleep sack and you're out like a light. And it's easy to transport you from my arms to the bed without you waking up. Life saver, people. Life saver. Will I be swaddling you up when you're two? Possibly.
Your bedtime routine involves reading a book every night. You have a serious love/hate relationship with books. You really love them at first, but eventually they make you furious and we have to stop. You are very touchy with the books and attempt to put your face all over it. I let you do it, but then the book apparently isn't doing what you want and you get madder than an old wet hen. Time to move on to the next part of the bedtime routine.
Favorites: It's a close race between your feet and your lotion bottle. After your bath, I have to let you hold onto the lotion while I'm applying it to you. You'll lay on your belly and hold it in front of you, lay on your side cooing at it while its beside you, or sit up and hold onto it with Herculean strength. You go cross-eyed staring at it.
My favorite thing is how cuddly you have become. When I'm holding you, you will lay your head on my shoulder. It literally makes me feel like I am the center of your universe. Like I am special.
